The Portland Anchor Newspaper

Charlie Frick’s first professional office was in the Portland Bridge Baptist Mission at 2308 Portland Ave, the same building that in 1983 became the Portland Museum, the current publishers of the Portland Anchor. Full circle! Frick joined the Portland Anchor in the early 1970s while working as Program Director for Senior House West where he, in his own words, “provided hot meals, health services, transportation, and a gathering place for seniors in the community,” ending his tenure there in 1979. Frick is described in that year’s November Portland Anchor as having “given of himself unselfishly,” with “a typical day [finding] him doing the ‘Hokey Pokey’ with the senior group or telling one of his famous ‘great’ jokes.”
Now himself retired from working with retirees, Frick carries that same fun-loving spirit for the Anchor, delivering each month’s issue to over 90 locations and counting. Frick takes great pride and joy in his distribution of the newspaper and has with his dedication to Portland become for many the friendly face of the Anchor, nicknamed the Portland Anchorman. Find him at The Table restaurant conversing with diners and representing the latest issue. If you see him, make sure to ask what his favorite karaoke song is!
