Portland Museum was thrilled to partner with our neighbors Squallis Puppeteers and Louisville Metro’s Office of Safe and Healthy Neighborhoods to bring children from Portland and beyond together to get creative and learn antiviolence through puppetry!

The weekly summer camp had five rules decided by its participants: Respect, Be Safe, Participate, Stay Positive, and No Put Downs. Each day began and ended with a speaking circle where the kids shared their most recent puppets and the experiences from their lives that inspired them.

Each day had a theme to help inspire creativity, not that many of these kids needed the inspiration! The sheer number of puppets made during this summer camp was astounding, and many campers wouldn’t move on to the next activity until they got every detail just right on their latest creation.

Then came the lights, camera, action! Using the roster of puppets created over the first half of the camp, kids got to write, direct, and perform their own performances based around nonviolence! Stay tuned for this year’s Portland Art and Heritage Fair for the premiere of the final products!
