Or, read on below for info on everything we’ll have this year!

STEAMROLLER PRINTING!

The activity that started it all! When a letterpress won’t do, bring in the heavy machinery! We’ll have a small army of student volunteers from UofL’s printmaking department led by the amazing Rachel Singel here to help us ink up your custom-designed blocks, then we’ll lay them on the pavement and roll them over for a nice, one-of-a-kind print. We’ll have paper and some fabric on-site for you to take your print home on FOR FREE, but if you’ve got a blank t-shirt or anything else you’d like printed on (assuming it can survive the steamroller) bring that along with you and let’s make some magic!

The prints we’ll be making will mostly be taken from blocks hand-carved by over 200 people who participated in this year’s woodblock carving workshops. Didn’t make it to one? No worries! We’ll have a booth set up at CeLOUbrate Print where you can make one for yourself before having it printed! If you’re a carver in your own time with a block you’ve been looking to have printed (especially if it’s extra-large), bring it!

WALK-UP WORKSHOPS!

There’s so much more to printmaking than woodblocks and steamrollers though, and thankfully the member of Louisville’s print community are happy to demonstrate some of them! We’ll have artists and arts organizations tabling throughout the day with prints to purchase and FREE activities to try, including:

  • Letterpress poster printing at Beech Grove Press
  • Kitchen lithography with A Place to Print
  • Botanical cyanotype with the Portland Anchor
  • Marbling with the Preston Arts Center
  • Rubber stamp printing with Gabby Wagers
  • Zine-making with David Wischer
  • Block printing on textiles with TheBraxton
  • and additional small printing activities with the Louisville Metro Arts Community Center

Alongside these activities will be more printmaking artists with show-and-tell objects from their unique printmaking processes! We’ll also have food and drink! Coffee and breakfast goodies from Portland’s upcoming SUGAR Bakery in the morning, then in the afternoon beer from TEN20 Craft Brewing, delicious Haitian food from longtime event favorites Haitian Exotica, and amazing bratwursts from Tommy’s Pizza.

EXHIBIT OPENINGS

That’s right, we’ll be opening up TWO new printmaking exhibitions this CeLOUbrate Print, both curated by Portland Museum’s artist-in-residence and CeLOUbrate Print’s organizer extraordinaire Erica Lewis (EVPL)!

Press On features brand new artworks produced by 20 local printmakers specifically for this exhibition, responding to the theme of “adventure and discovery” in their own style and perspective. Human, Too, features artworks produced and curated by the artists of Chance 4 Change, a substance abuse recovery program, during their incarceration at Louisville Metro Department of Corrections. This monochromatic exhibition is centered around the artists’ material reality and embodied experience as communicated in paper, including hand-made books and prints.
